Seven Deadly Sins, Lust and Envy

So, a recap from our last week fellowship, we learnt what are the definitions of sins and we also learnt the origin of Seven Deadly Sins and what are their roles in our everyday life. We drilled down specifically on Pride and Wrath, learning to be aware of them and to be able to draw the line from them to Self-Confident and Anger. Few bible passages what might help us to be more aware of how deadly these sins are and how God despise them.

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverb 16:18)

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Ephesians 4:26-27)

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires (James 1:19-20)

This week we’re continuing our study on Lust and Envy. Let’s talk briefly about these 2 deadly sins.

Lust – We human (especially man) seems to have issue around our self-control regarding this one. We see this clearly why this is a sin in God’s eyes and we must guard ourselves from falling to this sin at all cost. In the Ten Commandments, God commanded, “You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14), Jesus in Matthew emphasizes this even more by saying “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Clearly this is a sin! And yet this is something that we might face everyday, even Job said this on Job 31:1 - I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl.

Envy – Let’s start by the definition of Envy, Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines it as “painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage”. I highlighted the word that I think is important here, we feel painful and resentful by other’s advantage, as the old-saying says – The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. And then we desire to have the same advantage. There’s a passage in the bible clearly saying envy is not according to God’s will, (James 3:16)

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice

So, is there such thing as “healthy” envy? Can we say that envy is simply a way for us to push ourselves to be better?

Hope by now, you’re interested to know more and decide to join our discussion on this.

Please join our discussion this Friday, July 20th at 7 pm on the next series of 7 Deadly Sins, Lust and Envy.

Seven Deadly Sins, Pride and Wrath

This week we will start our 3 weeks series on 7 Deadly Sins. Sometimes it makes you wonder how bad these sins can be that they are categorized as “Deadly”. If you look at the list - Pride, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Glutonny, Greed, Sloth - some of them seems like a normal human nature; Whom of us that has never have Pride before, or Envy of other people? I believe the fact that its part of our nature, makes it deadly, because it’s more difficult for us to be aware of it, before it’s too late. The question than become, how do we guard ourselves from these sins? Where do we draw the line between self-confident and Pride; how about the line between anger and Wrath; surely we as Christian are allowed to get angry, aren’t we?

This week we will deal with two of the (so called) deadlier sins, Pride and Wrath. Hope you all can join us this week for the discussion and learn not only about the nature of these sins, but also how to prevent ourselves from falling into it.

Boundaries

Ever have a situation where you wanted to help others with their life, but ended up strangled yourself in their problem. Or how about by you helping them, you are creating more problems for yourself. For some people they help other because they want something in return. What do they have in common here? Boundary! Without boundary, we are not able to stand our feet firm on the ground to say No to bad thing and Yes to good thing!

This week we will learn about boundaries, not only how we can set and use our boundary, but more importantly learn to respect boundaries of others. Join us this Friday 7/6 for Boundary at 7pm

History of Christianity Summary

This week Theophany will summarize our History of Christianity series. We will recap the history of how Christianity started to spread and how it impacted the whole world until what we observe today. We will look into the life of people involved in bringing the message of Christ to the world and many of the obstacles they had to face along the way.

Join us this Friday 6/29 at 7pm for our last study of History of Christianity – Summary

From A.D. 65 – Execution of Peter and Paul at Rome

To 1989 – Fall of the Berlin Wall

History of Christianity, Part 6

Last week Ekklesia & Theophany celebrated Father’s day. Iin a way it was kind of disappointing that many of our Fathers were not able to make it (we had plenty of leftovers!); however those who came had a great time. Not only because of the good food (kudos to Ekklesia!), but also for fun games and sharing time that they could enjoy with their family.

This week in the last chapter of our series, we will be looking at the history of Christianity during the age of the world where even though Christianity spread around the world at phenomenal pace, it was unable to respond to attacks and criticism of the world. It was during this era where Friedreich Nietzsche speaks up boldly that “God is dead”. We will learn how the church responded to these attacks and how it brought movement in the church to be Evangelical. We will also look at three of the greatest leader in this evangelical movement, Carl F. H. Henry, C.S. Lewis and Billy Graham.

Join us this Friday at 6pm for History of Christianity VI – Into all the World: The Christian Movement in an Age of Uncertainty

From 1789 – Fall of the Bastille - To 1989 – Fall of the Berlin Wall.
